Serving on the Board is both a rewarding experience and an opportunity for personal and professional growth. Board Members play a vital role in shaping the vision, direction, and success of the Chamber and the Fountain Valley business community.

Board Member Job Description
Terms of Service:

Officers of the Board serve either a one-year term or a two-year term. Terms begin January 1.
Officers are eligible to serve up to two (2) consecutive terms.

Accountability:

Board Members are accountable to the full Chamber Board of Directors and the Chamber membership.

Expectations and Responsibilities:

Attend regular Board meetings and key Chamber meetings. The full Board meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. at the District 8 Administrative Building, unless otherwise designated. Meetings typically last about two hours.
Make a strong commitment to actively participate in Chamber initiatives and committee work.
Volunteer for assignments and complete them thoroughly and on time.
Stay informed about Chamber and Board matters; review meeting materials and reports in advance.
Participated in the Board’s annual evaluation and planning efforts.
Assist with membership growth and retention efforts.
Support Chamber fundraising events and activities.

Role of the Board:
The Board of Directors serves as the governing and policy-making body of the Fountain Valley Chamber of Commerce. It:

Authorizes and implements the Chamber’s annual program of action
Approves the budget and oversees Chamber property and assets.
Reviews and acts on committee and division recommendations.
Directs the overall operations of the Chamber.
Acts upon recommendations from the Executive Committee and the President.

Additional Board Member Responsibilities

Represent the collective interests of all Chamber members.
Maintain close communication with Chamber members to understand their needs and perspectives.
Help strengthen the Chamber’s financial stability by referring potential new members, attending events, and participating in fundraising activities.
Encourage and recruit other members to serve on committees and in volunteer roles.
Support the development of clear objectives and accountability for committees and task groups.
Maintain consistent attendance and punctuality at all Board meetings. Absence from three (3) meetings without sufficient cause may be considered a voluntary resignation.
Address criticism of the Chamber constructively - defend it against unfair criticism or help resolve valid concerns.
Remember that Board Members are ultimately responsible to the Chamber’s general membership.

Board Members Shall Not

Engage in day-to-day management of the Chamber.
Interpret or set policy for personal or individual interests.
Speak publicly on behalf of the Chamber unless authorized by the Board or President.
Sign contracts or otherwise obligate the Chamber legally or financially without proper authorization.
Overstep or undermine the authority of the President of fellow Board Members.
